E-Stim Therapy
Electrical stimulation or e-stim is a treatment that sends mild electrical pulses through the skin to encourage healing and reduce pain. There are various types of e-stim, with TENS and micro-current being the most commonly used in our office.
- TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. It is used to decrease pain by causing the pain sensing cells to focus on the TENS pulses more and your pain less.
- MENS stands for microcurrent electrical neuromuscular stimulation and is used to support muscle healing.
We use a machine that combines both TENS and Micro-current to relieve pain and stimulate muscle healing.
I may prescribe e-stim for in-office use or even for use at home during your recovery. You may have seen commercially available TENS or EMS units for sale on the market. Before using a system like this, please check with us to ensure 1) it is the right treatment for you and 2) it is set properly for you.
CAUTION: E-stim is NOT INTENDED for patients who have a pacemaker or other implantable heart stimulation device.
